Bee Tapping

The tap faint enough to be a wristwatch hand

belongs to a bee on this side of my living room window

who wants out and more

an end to disbelief

that the sky can be seen but denied

that warmth can seduce but deliver nothing

that sand can be squared by fire

We deign to pity hives

How energetic in our temerity

hewing a pyramid for a single man

carving gods’ faces on godless temples

etching epitaphs on squares of stone and boxes of bones

We tap and tap and tap to contain

what flows and flies

our memorials to passing geometry

our proud elides
